Letter, [183u], Society Hill, S.C., to Jonathan R. Davis, Monticello, Fairfield Dist[rict], S.C.

Fragment of letter exchanged between the sons of prominent Baptist clergymen, re Davis' prospects for courtship and marriage with Mary Ann Carter. Fragment of letter, written in two hands, including postscript margin notations signed J.C. Furman. The letter references Davis' courtship of and prospects for marriage to "that Georgia lady" and asks if it were not best for him to refrain from writing more letters to Georgia without an opinion from Mr. F[urman]. Notations in the hand of J.C. Furman question how Col. C[arter] would respond to advances to his daughter M[ary] A[nn] and cautions Davis to "Take time and keep as cool as you can." The recipient, Jonathan Ramsay Davis, son of Baptist minister Jonathan Davis and Rebecca Kincaid, was born at Monticello, Fairfield District, S.C., 5 Aug. 1816. He graduated from South Carolina College [present-day University of South Carolina] in 1837 and studied law before going to California ca. 1844 as a miner. Davis married Mary Ann Carter, of Milledgeville, Ga., and died in California in the 1860s.
